چکیده

Using a corpus of 17,000+ financial news reports (involving over 10M words), we perform an analysis of the argument-distributions of the UP and DOWN-verbs used to describe movements of indices, stocks and shares. In Study 1 people identified antonyms of these verb sets in a free-generation task and a match-theopposite task and the most commonly identified antonyms were compiled. In Study 2, we determined whether the argument-distributions for the verbs in these antonym-pairs were sufficiently similar to predict the most frequently-identified antonym. It was found that cosine similarity correlates moderately with the proportions of antonym-pairs identified by people (r = 0.31). More impressively, 87% of the time the most frequently-identified antonym is either the firstor second-most similar pair in the set of alternatives. The implications of these results for distributional approaches to determining metaphoric knowledge are discussed.

Conceptual Metaphoric Language Use in Structuring Political Discourse in Iran-West Relations: A CDA Perspective

The present study was carried out with the purpose of examining the role of metaphorical language in the critical discourse analysis (CDA) of political texts based on a modern framework postulated by Kövecses (2015). The corpus of the study consisted of thirty-thousand words chosen as a textual sample to see which source conceptual domains are used and what generic/discursive attributes emerge ...

MIL: Automatic Metaphor Identification by Statistical Learning

Metaphor identification in text is an open problem in natural language processing. In this paper, we present a new, supervised learning approach called MIL (Metaphor Identification by Learning), for identifying three major types of metaphoric expressions without using any knowledge resources or handcrafted rules. We derive a set of statistical features from a corpus representing a given domain ...

Identifying Metaphor Hierarchies in a Corpus Analysis of Finance Articles

Using a corpus of over 17,000 financial news reports (involving over 10M words), we perform an analysis of the argument-distributions of the UPand DOWN-verbs used to describe movements of indices, stocks, and shares. Using measures of the overlap in the argument distributions of these verbs and k-means clustering of their distributions, we advance evidence for the proposal that the metaphors re...

Corpus Approaches to Antonymy

The word “antonymy” was coined in 1867 by CJ Smith to describe word-pairs commonly known as “opposites” such as hot/cold, girl/boy and buy/sell. Some linguists (e.g. Lyons (1977) and Cruse (1986)) apply the term “antonymy” restrictively and would only identify the first of these three pairs as being truly antonymous. However, this seems counter-intuitive in many respects, and this paper will us...

Gearing the Discursive Practice to the Evolution of Discipline: Diachronic Corpus Analysis of Stance Markers in Research Articles’ Methodology Section

Despite widespread interest and research among applied linguists to explore metadiscourse use, very little is known of how metadiscourse resources have evolved over time in response to the historically developing practices of academic communities. Motivated by such an ambition, the current research drew on a corpus of 874315 words taken from three leading journals of applied linguistics in orde...
